Many
businesses leave SEO as the last job on the list
when creating their website. This can be costly
in both time and money as professional services
can be very expensive. By definition, Search Engine
Optimization is simply the way your website should
be built...this includes the very basics. Why not
build your website in the correct fashion from
the beginning and integrate the methods below into
the fabric of your work at home business...
Layout
You
should use an easily understood menu system, which
is very simple to follow. Avoid large distracting
images or gimmicks...they will merely slow down your
pages load time and repel your customers. Simple
navigation systems make is easy for the crawler bots
to find all your pages.
Metatags
Search
Engines are computers, not people. You must
code your website thoroughly and correctly so the
Search
Engines understand your site. Incorrect metatags
will not do you any favours...be sure to validate
your code in an html/seo program such as web
ceo. Make full use of title tags, descriptive tags,
alt. tags and H1,H2 etc tags. Use your keywords in
these tags to strengthen your sites ranking and validity
to the search engines...but don't over do it as the
Search Engines will interperet this as spam.
File
Extensions
Use
your niche's specific keywords in file extensions,
page names and ideally include it in your
domain name. These are just a few more boxes
ticked in the Search Engine criteria.
Outbound
Links
Keep
links leading away from your site to a minimal
until you are ranking well in Search Engines.
Outbound links tell the engines that your
site doesn't contain enough relevant information...as
you have to link to external sources. Remember
that content is the fabric of your website,
linking to many external sources is seen
as lazy and your website will disappear into
the midst of poor quality sites trying to
make a quick buck. Once and ONLY once your
website is ranking well should you point
to sites outside of your own unless it is
completely neccessary...
Inbound
Links
The
vast array of 3rd party sites, such as MySpace,
Facebook and Bebo can be used to create
unique profiles acting as a more personal
support to your main website. Use Social
Networking, RSS feeds blogs and newsletters
to give people the opportunity to remember
you...these will provide invaluable relevant
Inbound Links...a must for all websites.
Content
Keyword
rich content and lots of it! The search engines evaluate
the quantity and quality of the words on your pages...and
only return the most relevant to their results pages.
Your site should be keyword rich but not illogical,
write in common language as if speaking in person
but include references to your niche's specific keywords.
DO NOT use hidden paragraphs or try to trick the
Search Engines, they have been around a lot longer
than your website and they WILL find you out. The
simple answer? DELIVER QUALITY CONTENT!
